High-performance mini-pumps for electrohydrostatic actuators

Messier-Bugatti-Dowty designs and builds a wide range of hydraulic mini-pumps for aircraft, combining high performance, light weight and small size.

On larger aircraft, with systems further and further away from their energy sources, these pumps are used in systems based on electrohydrostatic actuators (EHA), wherever there is a need for remote hydraulic energy. EHA-based systems eliminate the need for centralized hydraulic generation with large, heavy networks of pipes. Typical applications include:

- flight controls
- landing gear extension/retraction and steering systems
- braking control.

Messier-Bugatti-Dowty offers a family of five standardized pumps, covering flowrates from 4 to 40 liters/minute, and operating at pressures up to 5,000 psi (350 bar).

These hydraulic mini-pumps have the following performance characteristics:

- high efficiency, up to 97% volumetric efficiency;
- high reliability, with MTBF (mean time between failures) up to 180,000 flight-hours;
- high operating speeds, up to 20,000 rpm;
- long service life, up to 54,000 flight-hours;
- proven cold startup ability: up to 65,000 starts between -55°C and -45°C.

Messier-Bugatti-Dowty already supplies 15 different mini-pumps on the Airbus A380 superjumbo jet:

- 12 for flight controls: ailerons, elevators, rudders;
- 3 for the LEHGS (Local Electro-Hydraulic Generation System) braking and nosewheel steering backup control systems.
